Tribunal de las Aguas, Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad

El Tribunal de les Aigües de la Vega de Valencia es un órgano consuetudinario y tradicional, depositario de una milenaria cultura solidaria y democrática del agua. Por ello, la candidatura presentada conjuntamente ante la UNESCO por la Comunitat Valenciana y la Región de Murcia ha obtenido la declaración de Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
El Tribunal de les Aigües desempeña su función jurisdiccional celebrando audiencia pública los jueves a mediodía ante la Puerta de los Apóstoles de la Catedral de Valencia. Su misión es garantizar el buen funcionamiento de las extensas y complejas redes de canales de riego y cuidar los intereses de las comunidades de regantes de las acequias de Valencia, Quart, Benàger-Faitanar, Tormos, Mislata,
Formado por agricultores elegidos democráticamente, esta corte dirime los conflictos entre regantes de manera oral, rápida, económica, pública e imparcial. Las sentencias son acatadas por el respeto que posee el tribunal y el reconocimiento de los jueces-agricultores como personas honradas, conocedoras de los usos y costumbres y ecuánimes en su procedimiento.
Su supervivencia durante siglos y su integración en el sistema judicial español con iguales garantías y valor jurídico que cualquier corte civil se explica por su contribución eficaz al mantenimiento de los extensos y complejos sistemas de regadío de las huertas Valencia construidas en época andalusí (siglos IX-XIII).


The Valencia Water Court, Intangible Heritage of Humanity

The Valencia Water Court is a traditional common-law body, custodian of an age-old community-focused and democratic water culture. Following its nomination presented jointly by the regions of Valencia and Murcia, it has been declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The Water Court performs its jurisdictional function by holding a public hearing every Thursday at midday outside the Apostles Gate of Valencia's Cathedral. Its mission is to guarantee the correct functioning of the region's vast and complex network of irrigation channels and safeguard the interests of the communities of irrigation water-users in Valencia, Quart, Benàger-Faitanar, Tormos, Mislata, Mestalla, Favara, Rascanya, Rovella and Xirivella.
Made up of democratically elected farmers, this court settles conflicts between irrigation water-users orally, quickly, cheaply, publically and impartially. Decisions are upheld through the respect held for the court and the recognition of the farmer-judges as honourable persons, experts in uses and customs, and fair in their proceedings.
Its survival over the centuries and its integration into the Spanish judicial system, with the same guarantees and legal value as any civil court, is explained by its effective contribution to the maintenance of the vast and complex system of irrigation channels used for Valencia's fertile plains, built in the Andalusí age (9th-13th Century)
