Buñol is ready for its
most international event: La Tomatina. On the last
Wednesday of August, this Valencian town attracts thousands of people from
around the world to share a unique and unforgettable moment. More than 120,000
kilos of tomatoes will be thrown in crossfire where the whole point is simply
to have fun.
Just ten years ago
this world renowned celebration was declared a Festival of International
Tourist Interest. Shortly before 11
a .m., a convoy of trucks loaded with tomatoes will ride
down the street Calle Cid and through the Plaza del Pueblo in anticipation of
the rocket that will be launched to herald the start of the battle.
Within minutes,
roads, pavements, walls, facades and everyone who gets in the way will be
stained with the deep red of these colourful ripe missiles. An hour later, the
launching of another rocket will signal the end of the Tomatina which of course
involves some rules and tips that all participants must respect.
